NZ Agricole Rum

A limited-edition 50% New Zealand agricole-style rum made from freshly pressed sugarcane grown at The NZ Rum Co distillery, with sweet fruit, fresh grass and aromatic cane juice character.

NZ Agricole Rum is a limited-edition release from The NZ Rum Co and is described by the producer as New Zealand’s first commercial cane juice rum. Unlike rum made from molasses or jaggery, this expression begins with freshly pressed sugarcane juice from cane grown at the distillery.

The release followed more than seven years of research into growing sugarcane in New Zealand. Through changing conditions that included droughts and floods, The NZ Rum Co developed cultivation techniques capable of producing healthy, productive sugarcane suitable for rum production. The resulting spirit was created as a proof of concept for locally grown New Zealand cane juice rum.

Freshly pressed cane juice with a Brix measurement of 19.5 provides the foundation for the rum. The juice is naturally aromatic, with sweet, fruity and lightly grassy characteristics that carry through into the finished spirit.

The cane juice is fermented for seven days before being double distilled in a copper pot still. The resulting spirit is gradually reduced to 50% ABV to retain the aromatics and flavours of the original sugarcane juice, then rested for four weeks before release.
