The Monk Single Malt Northland Whisky – Batch 2

A limited-release Northland single malt whisky made with smoked and distillers barley, matured for 24 months in virgin Hungarian oak and bottled at 46% ABV.

The Monk Single Malt Northland Whisky – Batch 2 is a small-batch New Zealand whisky from The Vicar’s Son. Following the first release in November 2025, Batch 2 uses the same core production process but has been distilled and matured entirely in Northland, giving the whisky a distinctly regional provenance.

The mash bill consists of 66% Gladfield Smoked Barley and 34% Gladfield Distillers Barley, fermented using Saf Spirits M-1 Whiskey Yeast. This combination provides the malt foundation for a whisky produced on a deliberately small scale.

The spirit is matured for 24 months at 63% ABV in a 20-litre virgin Hungarian oak barrel. The small cask provides significant contact between the spirit and oak during maturation, contributing concentrated barrel character. After ageing, the whisky is reduced to 46% ABV using pure Antipodes water and bottled in 700ml Saverglass Cognac bottles.

Only 25 bottles are expected from Batch 2, with the distillery reporting an angel’s share of approximately 25% during maturation. The release is scheduled for November 2026, with a limited number of bottles being offered through pre-sale.
